a father's day safari

For Father's day, we drove into the inner recesses of the Northern California boonies and took our main man to the ultimate "safari" experience.

We gave our 8-year old a point-and-click digital camera to document the experience as only she can see it...

Here are some of the pictures she took of the adventure. Except for the pictures of food, everything is hers, and hers alone...

~~~ ~~~
The agenda included brunch, a 45-minute walking tour (ouch!), and a 45-minute driving tour on a 'safari' vehicle.
It was a good-sized brunch...a lot of food with a little something for everyone, which was good considering the 45-minute walk...
But of course, a 'manly-man brunch' would not be complete without BBQ tri-tip, rotisserie chicken and baked salmon... yes, that's hollandaise sauce on the salmon, and I think the world would be a better place if we all had some once in a while. It's all about love, baby! Simply put: hollandaise + salmon = love & happiness.
The camp was set on 400 acres of rolling hills where the animals could roam freely (to the extent possible), and in peaceful co-existence, not like some countries I can mention here, but won't...
There were a lot of animals in the camp, and most were not your typical zoo cast of characters. I will say that these animals were in the closest thing to their natural habitat as possible. No faux rocks or anything of that sort that you would find in a cookie cutter zoo...
There were gazelles (background)...not sure about the animal in the foreground (wasn't really paying attention to the tour guide; sorry, I was too busy holding on to my seat)...
Some flamingos, who stood still, I had to do a double-take just to make sure they weren't made of plastic....
turtles basking in the sun...
and giraffes. How can you miss the giraffes?
this one kept his distance you could barely see him in the picture...
this one wanted to get up close and personal...
too close for comfort...
For a brief moment there it was a little too Jurassic Park...
